Top Auto Shipping Questions

questionsOver the last two years I have been keeping a mental list of what questions customers ask on a more frequent basis. Since it is crucial that people know what to ask for before they get zapped with any hidden charges, I put together a general list that can assist you in asking the right questions.

Before You Ship

  • Ask if your car must be operable. If it is not, you can bet they will charge you more.
  • Notify the shipper if they have any car/truck modifications that could inhibit the car from being loaded on the transport truck properly. For example, a camper shell, 4×4 lift kit, car lowered, etc.
  • Typically if your car exceeds 7 feet in height, it will probably not qualify as a car but what shippers refer to as “oversize car”. Essentially it means you will pay a higher rate. Confirm this.
  • Most shippers require a minimum of 4” ground clearance to safely load and unload your car. Make sure if this does or does not apply to you.

Preparing Your Car for Transport

  • Ask about any fluid leaks. Make sure your car has no obvious fluid leaks.
  • Keep connected or disconnect the battery? Confirm that your battery is secure in the mounting bracket.
  • How clean should my car be? A dirty car inhibits a proper inspection.
  • How much gas in the tank? The gas tank must have a minimum of (1/8) tank of fuel, but no more than (1/2) tank of fuel.
  • What about my car alarm? All alarm systems must be disconnected, disabled, or turned off.
  • Can I store other items in car to ship? All personal belongings must be removed. (except standard car items such as the jack and spare tire). And be sure to remove radios, cassette decks or CD players not built in. This includes car phones, garage door openers, and E-Z passes.
  • Should I remove my car antenna? All antennas must be fully retracted or removed.
  • What about car covers to protect in shipping? All exterior spare tire covers, grill covers, or car covers must be removed.
  • How many sets of keys are required for shipping? One set of ALL keys for the car must be provided.
  • I have a luggage rack, can it stay? Non-permanent luggage racks, bike racks, or ski racks must be removed.
  • I’m moving to a cold/hot climate. What should I be aware of? Your car must be prepared for the new climate. This may include engine coolant, transmission oil, and other fluids.

Remember These Car Receiving Rules

  • Can someone else receive the car delivery on my behalf? Typically you or your designated representative must be present for the inspection at the time of pick-up and delivery.
  • Do I have to sign? You or your designated representative must sign the bill of lading and condition report at both origin and destination.
  • What if I find a dent in my car after receiving? You or your designated representatives are responsible for confirming your car’s condition. This must be done before the driver leaves the destination.
  • If I do find damage? Damage will be noted by (the customer and truck driver) on the bill of lading at origin. In the unlikely event there is additional damage on delivery, it will be noted by (the customer and truck driver) on the bill of lading. (It is the customer’s (or their representative’s) responsibility to ensure that the pre and post inspections are done and the appropriate information is noted on the bill of lading. Reporting “additional damage” after the bill of lading has been signed is too late.
